Witness the world's most remarkable natural light show. The Southern lights...also known as the Aurora Australis!
Many people spend a small fortune to fly to Norway, Canada or the Arctic Circle to see the Northern lights, but did you realize that you can see the same phenomena on a flight departing from Christchurch, New Zealand.
Join Viva Expeditions & Aurora hunter and astrophysicist Dr Ian Griffin & a team of expert astronomers and fly into the night to witness one of the world’s most magical natural phenomena. Take off onboard an Air New Zealand Dreamliner; you will head south over the Southern Ocean towards Antarctica, aiming for latitudes of 62 degrees South, where the Aurora Australis is brightest.
We will take you far away from light pollution, high above the clouds and weather systems, to see a magical and unforgettable display with an uninterrupted view of the southern lights. You will also see constellations, stars, and planets as you have never witnessed them before.
You will receive a full in-flight catering service in both business and economy classes throughout the flights. Expert astronomers will provide information on route about how an aurora is created and point out their favourite night sky objects. They will instruct you on how to photograph an aurora and we will have a photographer on board to assist on how best to use your cameras.

Stewart Island/Rakiura is the southern-most Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world and offers one of the darkest locations to view the night sky and a fascinating place to spot the Southern Lights.
We offer you the opportunity to explore the night skies, searching for Aurora Australis and other secrets of the universe. At the same time, spend your days exploring the best Stewart Island has to offer, from Kiwi spotting to cruising the Paterson inlet, with time at leisure to explore further and do your own thing.
This is a small group tour perfect for those who want to try to witness the world’s most magical phenomena. Also fantastic for those wanting to view great dark skies and do some astrophotography. If the skies are clear, The Milky Way and stars are stunning!
There are many unique opportunities on offer: the rare chance to see Kiwis in the wild, Albatross swopping around, the rare bird life on Ulva Island, and an evening with a 3rd generation Stewart Islander - a fascinating insight into life on the island over the years!
Please note that as we are in nature’s hands, we cannot guarantee to see the Aurora. However, these tours are timed close to the new moon when skies are dark and over the months where Aurora activity is most likely.
